Amsterdam Summer School on Holocaust Studies and Memories on Location

From July 25 to 29, 2022, Dienke Hondius organized the first international Amsterdam Summer School course on Holocaust Studies and Memories on Location. Six participants traveled from Amsterdam to the Drenthe village of Nieuwlande, where more than 150 Jewish people in hiding found refuge. Participants visited the “hiding hole” located just outside the village. This was followed by a one-day program at Westerbork Memorial Camp, after which the trip continued to the Hannover area. A two-day program at the former Bergen-Belsen camp led to new knowledge, including the Jewish experience of hiding. The participants made a short film about their experiences. One of the participants was Professor Anne Knowles of the University of Maine, who specializes in the historical geography of the Holocaust.
